Escape Studios’ Film Society is back.

This is a republication of an article I wrote for my university blog. This article was edited by Alexander Williams. The reason for Ed Wood being promoted multiple times is because the dvd didn't work the first time we tried to screen it.

Film Soc has unveiled a new line up of films starting tomorrow Thursday 12th March and continuing every Thursday until the 23rd of April.

Escape Studios’ Film Society is a student society that screens films that will inspire students for their future projects.

The “Glorious Failures” season is a season of films dedicated to telling the stories of great artists who failed to gain the recognition they deserved.

Glorious Failures: Ed Wood

Thursday 12 March 2026

Directed by Tim Burton, this biographical drama follows the iconic cult filmmaker Ed Wood, best known as the director of Plan 9 From Outer Space, which is widely considered to be one of the worst films of all time.

Burton and actor Johnny Depp portray Wood as a visionary in his own right instead of mocking him. In typical Burton fashion, this film is heartwarming and darkly funny.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Thursday 19 March 2026

From indie directing duo ‘The Daniels’ comes this inter-dimensional cinematic fever dream. E verything Everywhere All At Once follows the story of the Wang family who are unexpectedly pulled out of their universe and into a quest spanning across dimensions. Winner of the 96th Oscar for best picture, this film has proved to be an instant classic. Uniquely absurdist and infinitely creative, the film will engage with students in its reflection of the age of the internet, neurodivergence as well as an example of independent film making.

Labyrinth

Thursday 26 March 2026

From Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets), Monty Python’s Terry Jones, and artist Brian Froud comes this classic in fantasy cinema.

Labyrinth stars a young Jennifer Connelly as Sarah Williams and David Bowie as the Goblin King in this fantastically surreal film, which evokes the works of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, and M. C. Escher.

Masters of Stop Motion #1: Jason and the Argonauts Thursday 16th April 2026

Based on the classic Greek myth, this swashbuckling adventure classic from Don Chaffey and visual effects icon Ray Harryhausen is of truly titanic proportions. Todd Armstrong is our hero Jason, the leader of the Argonauts as they set sail on the ship the Argo in a quest to find the legendary golden fleece.

Masters of Stop Motion #2: Alice

23/04/2026

Based on the classic novel by Lewis Carroll comes this masterpiece of animation. Directed by Czech animation maestro Jan Svankmajer, Alice blends Carroll’s whimsy with Svankmajer’s unique surrealist and artisanal style. Svankmajer presents Wonderland through the lens of domestic furniture and taxidermy, bringing a totally unique take on the story. If you are a fan of Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, or Wes Anderson, then Svankmajer is a must-watch.
